Dr. Edwin E. Burris, age 90, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2022, at his home in Springfield, MO. with his wife and three children at his bedside. He was born September 6, 1932 in Zion, MO. to Harry and Mary (Taylor) Burris. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour at age 12 in Fredericktown, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harry Burris Jr., his sisters, Edith Dean and Lela Vales, his father-in-law, T.F. Moore, mother-in-law, Juanita Moore and brother-in-law, Tommy Moore.
He is survived by his wife of 66 ½ years, Marjorie, their three children Kevin Burris, Brent Burris and Kimberly Burris (Cline) Guidry; six grandchildren, Jack Burris, Nick, Burris, Weston Burris, Schyler Cline, and wife Alexis Cline, Alicia Guidry and Patrick Guidry; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Burris, Jack Burris Jr., Brodie Cline and Bexley Cline.
Dr. Burris was a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army and a Korean War Veteran spending two years in Korea with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team as a Paratrooper and Code Clerk.
On June 9, 1956, he married Marjorie L. Moore in Belleville, IL. Within a year, God called him to the Gospel Ministry. He was ordained in 1957 and called as Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Lawton, KS while enrolled at Pittsburg State Teachers College where he received his B.S. Degree in 1961. He then received his Master of Theology Degree from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1964 and he earned his Doctorate in Theology from Luther Rice Seminary in 1974 in Jacksonville, FL.
During his 57 year ministry, he pastored churches in Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Maryland and Missouri. He served a term as Trustee at Hannibal LaGrange College in the mid seventies. He was an Adjunct Professor of Evangelism at Southwest Baptist University Bolivar for a couple of semesters in the late eighties. After his retirement from fulltime ministry, he continued as interim pastor and associate pastor. Evangelism and missions were an important part of his ministry. He held revivals and made missions trips to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and twice to San Andres Island in Colombia, South America.
He loved preaching and teaching God's Word, playing golf, Chiefs football and Cardinal baseball. He loved his family with all his heart and was a devoted, loving husband, and the most amazing dad in the world.
Arrangements are through Greenlawn Funeral Home East 3540 East Seminole, Springfield, MO 65809. Viewing will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Monday, December 12, 2022 and Services Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 9:00 AM with Pastor Travis Edwards of North Nixa Baptist Church officiating. Graveside Services will be held following the service, at 11:00 AM at the Missouri Veteran Cemetery 5201 S. Southwood Rd Springfield, MO.
