Obituary:
Michael Masinter passed away April 1, 2025, after gracefully fighting illness for several years. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, he was predeceased by his father, Morris Masinter, and his mother, Toby Masinter Schwartz.
His wife of 42 years, Donna Masinter, was lovingly by his side throughout their long marriage. Michael is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Allison Justice, Marcy Kushner (George), and Shannon Wells; his son, Mark Masinter (Rebecca); and his brother, Arnold Masinter (Lois). He has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Michael graduated from Washington & Lee University, B.S. 1958, where he was President, Phi Epsilon Pi, W&L Law School, LLB 1961 (Magna Cum Laude), and NYU School of Law, LLM Taxation 1962.
After completing his NYU degree, he obtained a Norwegian Seaman's license and worked his way to Europe. He shared endless stories about his time abroad and living on $5 a day. Upon returning, he joined Hansell, Post, Brandon & Dorsey, and rose to Tax and International Partner. Michael was admitted to practice before the highest courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, where he won United States v. Consumer Life Insurance Company.
He was a founding member of Temple Sinai and has been a member of The Temple for many years. He was also involved in various Jewish organizations and was on the Board of Overseers, Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was President, Atlanta Council on Foreign Relations; Maître, Atlanta, Commanderie de Bordeaux for 30 years; and was presented with the Ordre Du Mérite Agricole by the Republic Francaise.
A dear friend once said, "When Michael spoke, I listened." He was erudite, worldly, an innovative and entrepreneurial thinker, and a lover of great food, fine wine, and travel. He loved his family, skiing, cycling, and hiking. Michael and Donna loved to entertain, spend time with family, and travel the world.
A private burial was held at Arlington Memorial Park on April 4, 2025, followed by a memorial service, reception, Shiva, and Minion at The Temple.
Special thanks to everyone at The Terraces at Peachtree Hills Place for their thoughtful care, love, and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions to the W&L Hillel House, 204 W. Washington Street, Lexington, Virginia, 24450, or The Temple, 1589 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia, 30309.
