Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hultgren Funeral Home and Cremation Center - Wheaton on Jan. 16, 2025.
Edwin Riffel Selander was born on January 9, 1932, and entered Heaven on December 31th, 2024. There was a small family graveside service per his humble wishes. The family is so grateful that the service was led by Roger Burgess, a wonderful Visiting Pastor and great friend and confidant of our father from the College Church in
Wheaton, IL where Ed and Jo Ann attended.
Edwin is survived by his children Janet (Gary) Meyer, Tim (Aileen) & Tom (Sandra) Selander; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; his sister Helen; and many nieces and nephews.
Edwin grew up fast in his hometown of West Chicago, learning mischief from his older brother Karl and uncle "Riff". He was the proud half owner of a Model T car at just 14 years old. By 19, he only owned 1/3rd of a Piper Cub airplane but owned 100% of the close calls resulting from reckless acrobatics. A Harley Davidson completed his fleet and offered him just one more vehicle for disturbing the peace.
Despite hypnotizing a fellow soldier who developed violent hiccups instead of barking like a dog, Edwin served his country honorably in the US Army during the Korean War. He also provided food and firewood to many helpless South Koreans.
Upon returning home, his sister Helen introduced him to her best friend Jo Ann Powell. This time, he was the one hypnotized and they were soon married. They spent the next 66 years loving each other until Jo Ann's death in 2021.
Once married, one of his mentors insisted Ed apply as a salesman at Chicago Rivet. He grudgingly accepted the job but soon fell in love with RIVETS. It seemed that every conversation he ever had was always steered towards the subject of rivets. He took the bold step of founding Allied Tubular Rivet, which is still thriving today in Geneva, IL.
He worked overtime to grow the business but also found the time to invent three different tools. The U.S. Patent Office granted him a design patent for his successful dual sized Tie Rod Wrench.
After selling the business at 51 years old he spent his retirement trading commodities, stocks, and bonds. He would humbly admit to anyone that his modest returns resulted from rarely following own rules that he wrote down to succeed at his brilliant and his backtested trading systems. He did have enough success and interest to keep trading into his late eighties.
Ed and Jo Ann attended the College Church in
Wheaton, IL. He was baptized late in life by his brother in law, the late Eddie Powell. Our father broke a lot of rules as we all do, but he believed, repented, surrendered, and remained faithful to his Savior Jesus Christ until his death. His family misses him already and hopes that the Good Lord creates a crown for him in Heaven made entirely of bright shiny rivets.
