Edyth James Wheeler – 76, passed peacefully surrounded by her beloved family members on Friday September 27th at Baptist Hospital. She was born October 1, 1947 at Baptist Hospital. She grew up in Louisville and attended Duke University. After residing in Springfield, VA for over 20 years, she returned to Louisville.
Edyth, researcher, author and educator of early childhood education, obtained her Masters and PhD from George Mason University and served as Professor Emerita at Towson University and Early Childhood Education Graduate Program Director for 17 years. After retiring from education, Edyth was extremely active until her final days. A lifelong Episcopalian, she was an active parishioner and choir member of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church. Edyth loved supporting the arts, social justice, and living history, she was a member of the Colonial Dames, Jane Austin Society, the Filson Historical Society, Locust Grove, Louisville Scottish Society, Bourbon Women Association, and many others. She lived life to the fullest, undaunted by challenges, and set an example for others to get involved and stay active.
Edyth was preceded in death, her husband of 41 years, William H.G. Wheeler, and her son William (Bill) HG Wheeler Jr, and her parents Thomas James II and Alice (Howry) James of Louisville, KY. Edyth is survived by her daughter Alice Peyton Wheeler and granddaughters Edyth and Piper Carroll all of Columbus, Ohio, and her brothers Thomas James III and David B. James, both of Louisville.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday October 2nd at 11 AM, at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, 2822 Frankfort Avenue with graveside services immediately following for family and close friends at Cane Station Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday October 1st from 4-7 PM at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Ln.
Memorial contributions may be made to Locust Grove locustgrove.org or Home of the Innocents homeoftheinnocents.org.
Arrangements under the direction of Pearson's, "Where Louisville Goes to Remember".
