Obituary published on Legacy.com by L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home on May 31, 2025.
Elaine Theresa Stromeyer, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 24, 2025, in Denham Springs, Louisiana. She was born in New Orleans on January 16, 1929 to the late Ernest Anthony Hingle and Leontine Treadaway Hingle.
She was a 1946 graduate of Holy Angels Academy in New Orleans, obtained a teaching degree at Louisiana State University of New Orleans in 1964, and took theology classes at Loyola University in New Orleans throughout the 1970's.
Elaine was married for 55 years to her devoted husband, Melville "Mel" Ralph Stromeyer, who preceded her in death in 2003. They were both devout Catholics, and over the years and several moves, she was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner (where she also taught elementary school and was a choir teacher from 1964-1970); Our Lady of Divine Providence in Metairie (also a substitute teacher); St. Edward the Confessor in Metairie; Annunciation Catholic Church in Kiln, MS; St. Jean Vianney in Baton Rouge; St. Luke the Evangelist in Houston; and most recently, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denham Springs, Louisiana.
She had many artistic talents and hobbies, most notably as a seamstress for family and friends, creating beautifully detailed bridal gowns, and women's and children's clothing. She enjoyed drawing, painting with oils and watercolors, sculpting and ceramics, knitting and crocheting, smocking clothing for babies and children, quilting, gardening, antique shopping, traveling, collecting shells on the beach, reading, doing crosswords and puzzle making, cooking our favorite Louisiana seafood dishes, baking, family gatherings, and going "1940's big band" dancing with our father well into their 70's.
She is survived by her children, Scott Stromeyer of Nashville, Jean Eriksson (Erik) of Houston, and Mark Stromeyer (Tammy) of Walker, Louisiana. She was predeceased by four of her children, including most recently, Stuart James Stromeyer (survived by his wife, MaryAnn) of Diamondhead, MS, on April 3, 2025; Len Thomas, Mel Stephen, and Jan Ann, each succumbing to cystic fibrosis in the 1950's; and sadly, two adored grandchildren, (Mark's children) Jan Marie Stromeyer in 2003 and Stacy Adam Stromeyer in 2022. Elaine was also predeceased by her siblings, Ernest G. "Mervin" Hingle, Rosemary Hand, Lois Knight and Shirley Treadway Sanborn, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many adored nieces and nephews who departed our lives too soon.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Becky Rivard (Chris), Chris Stromeyer (Alta), William Stromeyer (fiancée, Ali), Nick Stromeyer (Justine), Nicole Meece (Brent), Ashley Hall (Chris), Vanessa Perrin (Jon), Kevin Stromeyer (Natasha), Carson Stromeyer, and Megan Stromeyer (Hayden Efferson). Elaine was also the proud great grandmother of 17 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind 10 step-grandchildren: Sean Menne, Corey Gisiner, Lee Gisiner, Jack Eriksson, Stacy Eriksson, Will Eriksson, Leigh Ann Weaver, Stuart Gaines-Weaver, Grant Weaver, and Abbey Gilliam; and her former daughters-in-law, Dorinda Forsythe, Stefanie Caserta and Cheryl Menne, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff of Harvest Manor in Denham Springs, LA, and in her last weeks, the additional care provided by the hospice staff of Life Sources Services of Baton Rouge. We are also deeply grateful for the loving care and companionship she received from her granddaughter, Vanessa, and great grandson, Felix, throughout her final years in Denham Springs.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at L. A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home located at 2607 Williams Blvd.,
Kenner, Louisiana, with Visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Hope Mausoleum (family only please) located at 4841 Canal Street, New Orleans.
