Eleanor Marguerite Rose Owen was born in Kingston, Jamaica on October 31,1944 to Eric Milo Rock Owen and Joyce Eloise Cook Owen. She was the eldest sister of Marjorie Lane Denise Owen Baillie, Andrea Erica Owen Breakenridge, Douglas Reginald Arthur Owen, and Margaret Ann Cecile Owen. She was affectionately known as “Buntin” to her family.
She left Jamaica as a teenager to pursue her education in America. When she arrived in the U.S. she lived with her dear Aunt Ruby in New York. After graduation from Brooklyn College, she worked in corporate America for Arkwright-Boston and Pitney Bowes. She met Jerome Folsom Lee at the YWCA in Stamford, Connecticut. The two were wed in 1975, and with him came a wonderful extended family from Opp, Alabama; Mama, Micey, Sue, Charles, James, and Calvin. Jerome and Eleanor had two lovely daughters, Erica Rose and Arlenia Camille.
After leaving Connecticut for Florida, Eleanor worked for Sun Bank. Throughout her corporate career, she raised her children to reach for the sun, the moon, and the stars, always encouraging their academic pursuits. She taught them that an education is key to professional success and that it was invaluable. Eleanor was an avid reader and cherished her small library of books. She went back to school and received her L.P.N. She then dedicated the bulk of her nursing career to serving her beloved veterans at the VA Medical Centers in Miami, Florida and West Haven, Connecticut. She later earned her Master’s in Social Work from Southern Connecticut State University. She continued working tirelessly for veterans with mental health issues. She did this while helping to raise her precious little grandchildren; Job, Elisha, KC, and Abyssinia.
She eventually left Connecticut to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. She lived in Columbus, Georgia, cared for by her family and her family of dedicated healthcare professionals: Brendette Moultrie, Imogene Brooks, Breyana Harris, and Shayla McCord. She closed her eyes for the last time May 2, 2025. Eleanor “Buntin” Marguerite Rose Owen Lee leaves to cherish her memory her sisters, brother, daughters, grandsons, granddaughter, and great-grandson.
