Eleanor Lowenthal Obituary

Eleanor Lowenthal
March 21, 1933 - February 12, 2026
Eleanor (LeVine) Lowenthal, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on February 12th at the age of 92. She was an artist, musician and music devotee, patron of the arts, figure skater, sailor, and community service volunteer who lived a rich life, full of accomplishments and lasting impact on the people and organizations that she touched.
After completing several years at the Tyler Fine Arts school, she married Mort Lowenthal in 1954 and took a job as a technician at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, mounting the ant collection of esteemed biologist E.O. Wilson. Eleanor processed ants for preservation and labeling as quickly as Wilson could mail them back from his far-flung expeditions to Australia and Papua New Guinea-sometimes mounting as many as 200 a day-and these specimens are still on display and used in research at one of the world's most prominent collections.
A resident of Stamford for more than 60 years, Eleanor volunteered her time tutoring at the Step Program at Stevens School and the "I Have a Dream" program, and was integral to the administration of the Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic for many decades. With her husband and several friends, she founded and ran the Roxbury Winter Club. She served on the Council of Churches and Synagogues, the 15th National Workshop on Christian/Jewish Relations and the Fellowship for Jewish Learning, was a member of the Coalition for Mutual Respect and was involved with many activities for U. S. Figure Skating. She was a loyal supporter of many local and New York City cultural and educational organizations. She also rolled up her sleeves and quietly contributed to dozens of causes, from doing layout and newsletter mailings for Stamford Twin Rinks to cooking breakfast and delivering presents each Christmas morning for community members recovering from addiction at the Liberation Program's home.
Though she didn't pursue arts professionally, arts were a core part of her life, from designing her home in Stamford and weaving pillows for the house, to building a harpsichord, teaching her daughters piano, and creating the hand-made silkscreen-printed holiday cards that she sent out to friends and family each year. Athletics were another throughline-as a teenager, Eleanor led an all-female U.S. sailing team in international competitions, and as an adult, she nurtured a love of skating in her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by Mort Lowenthal, her husband of 71 years, three daughters Terri Ann Lowenthal, Emily Cassella (Frank), and Meg Akabas (Seth); grandchildren Shai (Becky), Tal (Polina), Joelle (Emani), Shoshana (Josh), and Lev; and great-grandchildren Jacob, Natan, Ezra, Sabai, Ayden, Zayd, Dalia, and Eliot; and a loving sister-in-law and nieces and nephews. Her daughter Leslie, her parents Sadye and Sidney LeVine, and her sisters Wendy and Beth, predeceased her.

To the Lowenthal family,
Eli was an extremely important person in my younger life. Upon college graduation i became the manager of the Roxbury Winter Club and worked very closely with Eli.
She had a can do attitude which filtered into every aspect of the rink and supported everyone involved. I was fortunate to have skated with and to have known all the Lowenthal children. Not only were they champion skaters, but also so family oriented.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences as I have often spoken about Eli throughout the years.
With sympathy,
Will LaRusso

My heartfelt & sincere condolences go out to Meg and the entire Lowenthal family. I first met Mrs. Lowenthal (i still have to call her that) as a student in the Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic in the 1970´s. Throughout the years Ellie always remembered me when our paths crossed and greeted me with that genuine infectious smile and sincere interest in how my family and I were doing. She was one of a kind and her legacy will live on for ages. May Eleanore´s memory be for a blessing.
