In Loving Memory of Our Father, Elijah Amerson
September 29, 1935 – October 25, 2023
With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our father, Elijah Amerson, who left this world on October 25, 2023 at the remarkable age of 88. He faced life with a stubbornness and humor that made him one of a kind.
Born on September 29, 1935, in Penola, AL, he was known to us as Dad, but his stories and antics made him a legendary figure in our lives. He was the child of Harriett Porter and Elijah Amerson Sr, who surely had their hands full with a son as witty and tenacious as he was.
Our dad, Elijah Amerson, was a true character. He worked as a truckdriver for over 35 years, proving that even the most tedious of jobs could have a humorous twist. He captivated us with tales of on the road pranks and incidents that we still talk about today.
But his career was just one facet of his personality. Our father had a unique sense of humor that could turn even the most ordinary moments into hilarious memories. He loved to make people laugh, whether it was with his witty one-liners, endless puns, or sarcastic remarks.
His stubbornness was another source of amusement for us all. Once Dad set his mind to something, there was no changing it. Whether it was fixing something around the house, riding his bike when he had problems seeing, or deciding on the TV channel, he was unyielding. It's a trait we came to admire and, on occasion, debate with great warmth.
In his 88 years, Dad created a lifetime of unforgettable moments. He adored watching football in his favorite chair and making funny one-liners, and those passions filled our life with laughter.
He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and determination that will forever inspire us. Our father, Elijah Amerson, is survived by children, Cynthia Averiette (Louis) , Walter Anthony Hare (Cynthia), Nannette Cole Ray (Terrence) and Elijah “ June Bug” Mobley, Jr (Thelma Lee); grandchildren, Jessica Cole, Terrence Ray II, Miles Ray, Elijah R. Mobley III, Ramar L. Mobley, Kavoss D. Mobley, Sakarra Dancy and Dlandrion Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Oletha Amerson and his grandson, Jared Dancy.
We, his children, will carry on his spirit of resilience and humor.
In honor of our dad, a celebration of life will take place on November 2, 2023 from 12:30pm to 2:00pmCST at Webb & Stephens Funeral Home – North, 7774A Hwy 39, where we will gather to share stories and toast to a life well-lived.
Our father was a one-of-a-kind character who, to the very end, reminded us of the power of laughter and determination. We will remember him for the joy he brought into our lives, the countless smiles he shared, and the lessons he imparted, both through his humor and his stubbornness.
May our wonderful father rest in eternal peace.
