Elizabeth McCartney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Graham Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Dec. 30, 2025.
Elizabeth Frances "Betty" McCartney passed away peacefully at the age of 94, surrounded by love and the memories of a long and beautiful life. Born in California to the late Elmer and Hazel Cass Hetrick, Betty spent her early years on a family farm, where she learned the values of hard work, resilience, and kindness that shaped her life and the lives of those around her.
As a young woman, Betty began studying to become a nurse, guided by her lifelong desire to care for others. During that time, she met the love of her life, Robert "Mac" J. McCartney. Together they began their journey as a devoted military family, supporting one another through every new chapter and adventure. Betty embraced the role of a military wife with strength and grace, forming lasting friendships and memories-especially during their years in Japan and California, where she was an active member and then a proud President of the Wives Club for the USS Enterprise in California.
Later in life, Betty built a meaningful career with Bank of America, where she served as a Head Teller and was admired for her reliability, warmth, and compassion toward both colleagues and customers. She retired at the age of 55, happily trading workdays for what became one of her greatest joys-traveling. Whether near or far, any place became special when shared with family and friends.
Faith and community were also central to Betty's life. In her later years, she was a grateful and joyful member of the Amazing Greys at St. Stephens in Chesapeake, where she found fellowship, laughter, and purpose.
Betty was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Robert J. McCartney. Her loving spirit will forever be cherished by her daughters, Sherry Miller (Cal), Corinne Hupman (Dana), Laura Carroll (Jim), Myra Wilmer (Roger), and Mona McCartney. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Corinna Sanginario, Jeremy Fay (Amanda), Brandan Hupman (Jordan), Randall Fay (Amber), Sarah Kirkland (Jake), and Nichole Fay; her honored nephew David Emig (Mary); her great-niece and nephew, Heather Tefsky and Troy Emig (Blair); and her beloved great-grandchildren Autumn and April.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Graham Funeral Home & Crematory, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the service, with a reception to follow the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
