William McCartney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burnside Funeral Home on Mar. 20, 2026.
William Howard McCartney, 91, of Bridgeport, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026. Born September 3, 1934, in Bridgeport, he was a proud 1952 graduate of Bridgeport High School and lived his entire life in the community except for his years of military service, becoming a beloved fixture known for his unwavering kindness, generosity, and ready smile.

Bill was a devoted husband to Margaret McCartney; they were married on May 23, 1969, celebrating 56 wonderful years together. He was a loving father to William H. McCartney Jr. ("Billy"), born May 30, 1973, and cherished every moment spent with his family.

A Korean War veteran, Bill served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956, stationed in Japan, where he specialized in communications and cryptography. Upon returning home, he served with the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department throughout the 1960s and rose to the rank of Chief before retiring in 1970. He then began a distinguished 25-year career with CNG Transmission, starting as a field technician in 1970 and advancing to manager of telecommunications for the company's entire pipeline network upon his retirement in 1995.

Deeply faithful, Bill served as a deacon at Bridgeport Baptist Church alongside his wife, generously devoting his time, talent, and resources to the congregation and its mission.

He was an avid supporter of Bridgeport sports, especially football, and could recite weekly scores, stats, and player highlights to anyone who would listen-including his son. A passionate West Virginia University fan, he treasured family trips to Mountaineer football bowl games and Final Four basketball tournaments. His coaching legacy included leading his son's teams to the 1985 Bridgeport Little League Championship and the 1986 Jerry West Basketball Championship.

Above all, Bill put others first. Whether driving a friend to a doctor's appointment, delivering a hot meal, stopping by with a quick "Hi," or sharing a joke at a favorite local restaurant or Friday night football game, he brightened every room he entered and left a lasting impression on the countless lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret McCartney; his son, William "Billy" McCartney Jr. and wife Christie; grandchildren Katie Reese McCartney, Kinley McCartney, and Kellen McCartney; sister Linda McCartney Harris; sister-in-law Barbara Utter; and 16 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Opal McCartney; brothers Charles McCartney and Warren McCartney; sister Ruth Scarberry; parents-in-law Ernest and Katherine Utter; sister and brother-in-law Patty and Roger Carder; and brother-in-law Jim Utter.

A lifelong Bridgeporter who gave more than he ever took, Bill McCartney will be remembered not for the titles he held, but for the love he freely shared.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Harrison County Humane Society, P.O. Box 4397, Clarksburg, WV 26302.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, from 10 a.m. – 12 Noon on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, followed by a private family graveside service at Bridgeport Cemetery with Reverend Tom Horne presiding.
