Elizabeth "Lizzy" Mestousis, 91, of Pearl River, New York, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, with her husband Markelos "Mark" Mestousis by her side.
Born on February 17, 1934, in the village of Karies in Chios, Greece, Lizzy was the beloved daughter of Dimitria and Stamatios Res. In 1951, she courageously came to America via boat with practically nothing, ready to pursue her dreams. In 1955, she married the love of her life, Mark, and together, they built a life of love and devotion, celebrating 70 incredible years of marriage this past January.
Lizzy and Mark settled down together in Bronx, NY, where they raised four daughters-Katina (Jerry) Burns, Dimitria (James) Olson, Konnie (Eugene) Gardner, and Kelly (Tom) Marsh-instilling in them the values of hard work, love, and family. In 1972, they moved to Pearl River, NY, where Lizzy lived the rest of her life, surrounded by the growing family she cherished.
A proud mother, Yiayia, and "Super Yiayia," Lizzy's legacy lives on through her 12 grandchildren-Mark (Kathryn-lyn) Burns, James (Lauren) Olson, Kevin (Catherine) Burns, Thomas (Kate) Olson, Gregory (Kerry) Burns, Eugene (Susanna) Gardner, Nicholas (Nicole) Burns, Christopher Gardner, Michael Marsh, Tommy Marsh, Elizabeth Burns, and Stephen Gardner-and 10 great-grandchildren-Liam, Sophie, James, Madelyn, Francesca, Payton, AJ, Joey, Hudson, and Claire.
Lizzy was preceded in death by her sister Theodora (Michael) Poulos, and is survived by her siblings Patia (Johnny) Venetos, Despina (Aldo) Res, Mary (Richard) Kroll, Irini (Chuck) Eckes, and Peter Res. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lizzy worked as a waitress for over 40 years, a role that fit her perfectly. She loved connecting with people-asking about their lives, sharing her stories, and never missing a chance to make someone feel important. Everyone knew if they needed a boost, they could turn to Yiayia-whether she was calling you beautiful, making you a bowl of her famous chicken soup, meatballs, or grape leaves, or surprising you with a gift from one of her beloved Macy's shopping trips.
Lizzy took pride in everything she did. Her home was so clean she proudly claimed you could eat off the floor, and everyone enjoyed the meals she prepared with her favorite ingredient: love. She was always dressed to impress, often in high heels, fancy dresses, and fur coats, looking like "Queen Elizabeth" well into her later years-even donning a tiara for her 90th birthday celebration.
She loved dancing to Greek music, shopping at Macy's (and bragging about the discounts!), playing slot machines at the casino, and sneaking chocolate candies to her great-grandchildren
when their parents weren't looking. But more than anything, she loved her husband Mark unconditionally and thrived at being the Matriarch of her big, beautiful Greek family.
Lizzy's warmth, generosity, and love will live on in every life she touched. She made the world more beautiful-not just with her compliments, but with her heart, kindness, and cooking.
