Elizabeth "Betty" Lena Roe passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Pioneer Medical Center with her loving family by her side. She was proud to still be residing at her home on the Boulder River.
Betty was born June 12,1932 to Jay & Cornelia Van Orden at the family home in Sussex, New Jersey & was later raised by her treasured grandparents. Betty attended Sussex County High School where she proudly was the drum majorette & earned awards in her business classes. Betty met her high school sweetheart, Tom, through his mom, Marie Roe, who was an earlier teacher of Betty's. On August 29, 1951, they were the first American couple to be wed at Prince Edward Island. Betty lived with Tom's parents, DW & Marie Roe while Tom was in the Army overseas & she worked at Sussex County Bank. Betty always "proved her monthly bank statement" to the penny until June 2025! Tom & Betty began their family in Sparta, New Jersey. They later built & enjoyed for 10 years their home next to Tom's parents in Lafayette & later moved to Montana in 1972. Betty's determination made a significant difference to the success of their move of a family & business. Betty was vital to Tom Roe & Son Construction for over 60 years in the bookkeeping & key business decisions. At 93 years young, Betty would assist with tasks in the office from time to time & cover the phones. Betty was a remarkable Mom & Grandmother "GG". She always took time to support her family in their activities & adventures. Her kitchen was her domain & where she proudly displayed her family photos, baked bread & large family dinners plus always offered banana bread & coffee ready when anyone visited. Betty was a keen rummy player & won almost every game. Christmas was a highlight of the year for Betty along with family & friends' gatherings. Betty loved traditions, family & their home on the Boulder River. The harvest of the garden, raspberries & apple orchard provided vegetables, apple cider, raspberry jam for many & abundant memories for all generations. Whenever you departed, Betty would sincerely wave goodbye.
Preceding Betty in her death was her husband, Thomas D & daughter, Nancy Lee. She is survived by 3 children Charles Thomas "Chip" Roe (Melanie), Robin Elizabeth Hanel (Tom) & Betsy Dee Indreland (Roger). Grandma "GG" was loved by 9 grandchildren: Missy, Sara (Paxton), Writer (Shannon), Stacy (Ryan), Adam (Amanda), Brenda (Chris), Liz (Brad), Anne & Kate (Davis) & 18 great-grandchildren: Zoey, Lily, Izzy, Ian, Brock, Bella, Aspen, Wren, Abram, Mia, Elise (Caden) Ethan, Eli, Owen, Nora, Charley, Mac & Brooks plus her brother Randy (Jackie) Van Orden.
The family would like to thank Pioneer Medical Center for their caring & kindness. Memorials can be made to the Sweet Grass Community Foundation or the charity of your choice.
