Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garland - Misencik Funeral Home & Crematory Service - Amherst from Jan. 17 to Jan. 27, 2025.
Elizabeth "Betty" Katherine Szucs (née Broadfoot) left us on January 15, 2025, undoubtedly bound for heaven with a crochet hook in one hand and a list of people to take care of in the other. Born on July 18, 1942, in Lorain, Ohio, to Marybelle and James Broadfoot, Betty was the eldest sibling to Jim, Barbara (Draheim), and Denise (Duncan). She mastered the fine art of big-sistering early, a role she carried with both pride and authority.
A graduate of Lorain High School, Betty met her lifelong companion, Robert "Bob" Szucs, and they married in 1963. Together, they built a life in
Amherst, Ohio, welcoming daughter Lynee in 1964 and son, Robert in 1965.
Betty was a woman of deep faith and endless talents. An active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she served her community and her family with unwavering devotion. Though she claimed to "hate cooking," she somehow perfected Grandma Feldkamp's macaroni salad, and her sugar cookies were legendary-so much so that her grandchildren frequently fought over them (and not just at Christmas).
Betty was a homemaker by heart as well as an odd-job extraordinaire. From her time as a receptionist for an optometrist to her years as a care-giver for others and our favorite... a "chocolatier" at Faraho's Candy, Betty's true calling was simply being there for anyone who needed her. Whether handcrafting crocheted afghans (that now blanket couches and hearts everywhere) or lending an ear and a dose of her sharp wit, she made life better for all who knew her.
Preceded in death by her parents, Marybelle (Reising) and Jim Broadfoot, her brother Jim, and her sister Denise, Betty now watches over her husband of 61 years, Bob, her children Lynee (Dave) Bixler and Bob (Sherry) Szucs, her beloved grandchildren: Andy Bixler, Miranda (Justin) Szink, Ian (Jordan) Bixler, and Robert (Catherine) Szucs, great grandchildren Jaclyn and Rory Szink She also leaves behind her sister Barbara (Draheim), countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and more friends than she probably ever realized, all of whom are better for having known her.
Betty laughed as hard as she loved, gave advice you could always count on, and lived her life with grace, humor, and an unmistakable sparkle. She was sweet with just the right amount of sass and the kind of person who made you feel at home the moment you met her.
We will celebrate Betty's life the way she would have wanted: with love, and laughter. Friends will be received Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Betty's memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., with Rev. Timothy O'Connor, pastor, officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to St, Joseph Catholic Church.
Betty, you were the heart of our family and the sunshine of our lives. We miss you dearly, but we'll carry your love with us always-and yes, we promise to keep the sugar cookies coming.
