Ellen C. Metcalfe

Cumberland - Ellen Clare Metcalfe, 86, of Cumberland passed away following a brief illness on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. The family is forever grateful to the kind and compassionate professionals that cared for her at HopeHealth.
Ellen, a strong and devoted mother, will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn (Carrie) E. Belisle, and Peter, of Cumberland; two sisters, E. Carol Metcalfe of Riverside and Sherrye Burrows (Walter) of Exeter; and three adoring grandchildren, Madeleine Clare, Norah Grace and Halle Rose Belisle. She will also be remembered fondly by dear cousins and friends.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Albert and Evelyn (Cheshire) Metcalfe, her childhood was spent in Bristol then Barrington, surrounded by family. She was a graduate of Barrington High School, class of 1954. She lived in Riverside for most of her adult life before moving to Cumberland fifteen years ago.
Ellen worked as a payroll clerk for the E. Rosen Company (Schoolhouse Candy Company), Pawtucket for many years, and then worked at Gateway Healthcare followed by Meeting Street in similar roles before retiring to take on her most treasured role as caretaker for her grandchildren, Grammie's girls.
A long time parishioner at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Riverside, she was an active and dedicated member. She taught Sunday school, served as a reader, and provided leadership on the vestry including serving as both junior and senior warden. Ellen was also active in the St. Mark's Players, where together with her daughter she would participate in musical theater performances. Her favorite ministry was singing in the church choir; a beloved hobbyshe continued until earlier this year.
Following her move to Cumberland, she became a parishioner of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Pawtucket, and eagerly joined the choir and began contributing as a volunteer for the annual Christmas bazaar. Ellen had many caring friends at St. Luke's.
Ellen was a generous giver of her time and talents, a value and purpose that she instilled in her grateful family. Her love of serving others was something that provided her much joy and fulfillment. A lifelong volunteer for the church, her years in Cumberland brought her the opportunity to also volunteer at the Northern Rhode Island Food Pantry, and as a docent for Hearthside House Museum, Lincoln.
Ellen's greatest joy was found in her family. The memories and lessons carried by her daughter and three granddaughters will be her incredible legacy.
A funeral service will be celebrated Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 670 Weeden Street, Pawtucket. Burial will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown. Relatives and friends of Ellen and her family are invited, and may call Friday, December 16 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln.
