Ellen Adeana (Mohawk) Schreiber, an enrolled member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe, age 88, of Bowler, WI passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Evergreen Nursing Home in Shawano. Ellen was born on June 7, 1936, in the Town of Red Springs daughter of Milford (Riley) Mohawk, Sr. and Elizabeth (Liza) (Welch) Mohawk. She attended Mission School in Red Springs and Gresham School. Ellen was united in marriage May 25, 1957, to Duane Schreiber, Sr. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Morgan Siding. They were married 43 years before Duane passed away in 2000. Together they raised six children. Ellen worked hard along with Duane in the woods, locally and up north, for many years. She also worked for North Star Casino and the S-M Health Center and S-M Community. Throughout the years, Ellen and Duane put on many miles traveling to follow their children playing in sports. In the past several years, Ellen attended many pow wows and went on shopping trips with her best friend Karmen Mason. She also enjoyed playing bingo at the elderly center and could dance a mean jig just like her dad Riley. Ellen enjoyed spending time with family and her large extended family. Ellen lived a hard life but always persevered, as she was a two-time cancer survivor, beat typhoid fever two times and fought this last medical battle like the true warrior that she was. Ellen was dearly loved and admired by family and friends of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
Ellen is survived by her six children, Karla (Skeeter) Bowman, Duane "Man" Schreiber, Jr. (Tina), Annette Schreiber, Sterling Schreiber, Sr., Kimberly Schreiber (Barry), and Stacey Schinko (Henry); 16 grandchildren, Duane "Rocky" Schreiber, III (Chelsea), April Berquist (Jack), Blake Olson (Betsy), Sterling "Durney" Schreiber, Jr. (Melanie), Ashley Reiter (Brent), Erin Davids, Brock Schreiber (Whitney), Leslie Bowman, Lindsey Bowman, Aimee Bernal (Alex), Jordan Schreiber (Lauren), Danika Decorah (Jason), Diaz Decorah (Ayah), Danyelle Decorah (Jacob), Adrienne Jarvis (Austin), and Tristin Schinko (Torri); 26 great-grandchildren, Lexus, Sterling III, Arianna, Derek, DeeAnna, Brett, Kadence, Kimberly, Sage, Nolen, Dakota, Cru, Brynn, Hadley "Nuggie", Savanna, Olivia, Eli, Killian, Bennett, Maximus, Vaeda, Luken, Maverick, Odin, Hunter and Annabelle; siblings, Milford Mohawk, Jr. (Lou Ann), Mabel Miller, Donna Bucholtz (Mike); sisters-in-law Darla Klemmerman (Dave) and Judy Mohawk; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and best friend Karmen Mason.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; parents Riley and Liza; in-laws; brothers George Mohawk, Sr., Jerry Mohawk and Michael Mohawk, Sr.; brother-in-law Skip Miller; sisters-in law Janis Mohawk and Carrol Mohawk; nephews, Pooter Mohawk, Trevor Mohawk and niece Jerilyn Johnson.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Eunice Stick Gathering Place, Stockbridge-Munsee Community with Pastor Zook officiating. Burial will be in the Town of Herman Cemetery in Gresham. Visitation will be held at the Eunice Stick Gathering Place on Tuesday prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 noon and continuing until the time of the service, there will be a meal on-site following the burial.
The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Nursing Home, the Hospice Staff and a special thank you to Pastor Zook for blessing our mom helping her to peacefully enter the spirit world.
