Elinor "Ellie" Nunnelley Camenisch, 70, of Stanford, KY passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025 at University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, KY. Born on March 9, 1955 in Stanford to the late Oscar and Elinor Nunnelley Camenisch.
Ellie turned every moment into an adventure, whether she was inspecting meat, teaching agriculture, or tending to her family farm. She was a woman of strength, kindness, and fiery determination, with a stubborn streak that enabled her to break barriers and defy the norms. Ellie graduated from Stanford High School in 1973 and the University of Kentucky in 1978, and her zest for knowledge and dedication to her work led her to become the first woman Ag Teacher in North Carolina in the early 1980s. Her love for her craft was mirrored in her love for her family farm in Stanford, Kentucky, which she returned to in 1993.
As anyone who knew Ellie can attest, she was as unique and free-spirited as they come. Often seen barefoot, Ellie loved to feel the earth beneath her feet as she moved through life, a testament to her grounded nature and her deep connection with the land. Ellie was a passionate woman, unselfishly giving of herself to her family, the farm, and her community. She was a pillar of the Stanford Presbyterian Church, where she nurtured her faith as fervently as she nurtured others.
She is survived by two children, Andrea Bowden (Andrew) of King Island, Australia and Coleman Camenisch (Kayla) of Kentucky, two grandsons, Oscar and Travis Bowden; seven siblings, Anna Camenisch (Angelia), Betsy Elliott, Carmy Jordan, J.B. Camenisch (Jacque), Johanna Camenisch, Nancy Camenisch, Robert Camenisch (Marsha); and several nieces & nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Elinor Camenisch; four siblings, Bunky Camenisch, Christian Camenisch, John Camenisch and Mickey Davis; and her partner of 27 years, Gene Richards.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford, KY.
