Dr. Ellis Wayne Evans, Sr., MD, of Macon, Georgia, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of his Life will be held at New Providence Baptist Church, Smarr, GA at 10 AM on Saturday, July 19, 2025 with Reverend Clay Bowden and Don Faulk will be officiating. Burial will be private for family only at Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele. A Visitation will be held Friday, July 18, 2025 from 5-7 PM at Snow's Memorial Chapel on Bass Road.
Born on June 18, 1944, in Cordele, Georgia to the late Crayton Henry Evans and Essie Mae Mixon. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Henry Evans and his sister, Lola Toole.
Dr. Evans dedicated his life to the healing and service of others through medicine, leadership, and compassion. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia in June 1966 and went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in June 1970. He completed his internship at the Medical Center of Central Georgia (1970–1971) and his residency in General and Peripheral Vascular Surgery (1973–1977), launching a distinguished private practice in Macon in July 1977.
Dr. Evans served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1971 to 1973. His medical career spanned decades, during which he was affiliated with the Medical Center of Central Georgia and Coliseum Medical Centers. He was board certified by the American College of Surgeons in 1978 and recertified in 1988 and 1997 and continued to electively recertify every two years to present.
A respected leader in the medical community, Dr. Evans held numerous hospital leadership roles, including Chief of Surgery and President of Staff at Charter Northside Hospital, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chief of Staff, and Vice Chairman and Chairman-elect of the Board of Directors at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. He was honored with the Navicent Health Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. He performed over 55,000 surgeries in his lifetime.
Dr. Evans was a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Medical Association of Georgia, Georgia Surgical Society, Southern Medical Association, and the Bibb County Medical Society. He also contributed to medical literature with several publications on topics such as vascular surgery, oncology, and emergency medicine.
In his personal life, he enjoyed farming, particularly growing watermelons. He happily distributed his watermelons to over 1000 people every year. He especially loved giving them to the hospital employees every July.
He is survived by his beloved wife of forty-two years, Kahran Stringfellow Evans, and their four children: Ellis Wayne Evans, Jr. (Andrea), Dr. Marcus Christopher Evans (Laura), Rebecca Evans Dogan and Brooke Evans Stanley (Nathan). He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Collier Evans, Thatcher Evans, Chance Kornegay, Anne Travis Evans, Christopher Evans, Mary Frances Evans, Bagcan Dogan, Evans Olivia Stanley, Janna Stanley, and Nate Stanley.
Dr. Evans will be remembered for his brilliant mind, steady hands, and kind heart. His legacy lives on in the lives he saved, the family he nurtured, and the community he served with humility and grace.
