Elma Jean Winn

Elma Jean Winn of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at the Laurels of Charlottesville, after a brief illness, where she was affectionately known as "Winnie". Jean was born in Campbells, Virginia, a daughter of the late Alice Meeks Winn and Mike Winn. Although never married, she loved children and babysat well into her late years. She attended First Christian Church until she became a resident at the Laurels and there attended the services on Sunday mornings. At First Christian Church she was a member of the JOY class and Young at Heart. She is survived by one sister, Charlotte Stoneburner; one niece, Anne S. Davis and husband, Bernie; two nephews, Paul Stoneburner and wife, Linda, and Mike Stoneburner and wife, Judy; also great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous cousins on both sides of the family. A special thanks to the staff of the Laurels for their care and compassion for Jean during her residency there. There will be a graveside service at Riverview Cemetery 3 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2012, officiated by Mr. Jeff Villio. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, VA 22902 or the First Christian Church, 3285 Keswick Road, Keswick, VA 22947. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.hillandwood.com.

Jean was a very special lady and also special to my children. Jean took care of my son Brandon from the time he was a baby until he started school. She also stayed with Brandon and his twin sisters, Jennie and Kelly. We loved her very much.

Jean was a very special lady who touched the lives of those who knew her. Jean cared for many children during her life, two of which were mine. She treated them like her own and devoted her entire day to their care. They were never placed in front of the tv for entertainment. Instead, Jean walked them to the park, took them downtown to the Discovery Museum, or hopped on the bus for special trips. My daughter Meghan had the pleasure of working where Jean resided in her last days. How appropriate that Meghan could return the love and care that Jean had provided her in her younger days. We will miss Jean and her incredible bear hugs. We know she will continue to be a caretaker in heaven and we take comfort knowing she is still watching over us. We love and will miss you Jean!
