Elmer Luther Lindsey, known to most as Luke, was welcomed into Heaven by a loving Father on Sunday evening, August 17, 2025, at the age of 81. Luke was born in Cullman County, Alabama, on December 20, 1943, to John Austin and Dovie Louise Mayhall Lindsey.
A selfless man, Luke dedicated his life to our great nation for twenty-eight years while serving in the United States Air Force. Luke loved the Air Force as well as the country he served. As a Defensive Aerial Gunner Superintendent/Aircrew Instructor and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician, Mr. Lindsey served honorably both stateside as well as overseas. His commitment to our nation included a tour in the Vietnam War where he received commendation for his service and sacrifice. While serving in the Air Force, Luke became a graduate of military education where he earned a bachelor’s degree. As a nation, and as a community, may we remember Luke’s sacrifice and service to our nation and its people with gratitude for generations to come.
Upon his retirement from service, Luke returned home to Cullman County. Luke worked for Americold as a supervisor for twelve years. He enjoyed riding his Harley and catching up with old friends and family. Luke and his wife, Marti, bought a home in Holly Pond where Mr. Lindsey fell in love with farming. As much as Luke loved military life, he loved being on the farm just as much. Following a storm, Luke was introduced to a neighbor, Tommy Murphree, who in turn introduced Luke to another neighbor, Glenn Arrington, and a trio of inseparable friends formed. These three gentlemen helped one another, as well as many friends and neighbors throughout the community. Luke would forget about his own yard to cut hay for someone else. Luke also began mentoring a young man in the community and his friendship with Jessey Morton became something dear to him. Mr. Lindsey’s care and concern for his community, and the friendships he offered to others, will be missed greatly by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Luke was also a loving husband and father. Marti was cherished by Luke and his adoration for her was known to many. Marti and Luke attended Temple Baptist Church in Fairview where Luke enjoyed worshipping his Savior. Mr. Lindsey also loved his children dearly, and he turned into a doting and proud grandfather when his grandbabies came along. There was nothing Luke would not do for his family, and his love and devotion to those he cared for was evident in many ways.
Mr. Lindsey is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jerry Lindsey, Gary Lindsey, and Robert Lindsey; and bonus son, Tim Haynes.
Those left to cherish Luke’s memory includes his wife, Marti Lindsey; son, Michael Lindsey; daughters, Michelle Padilla (Jose), Maria Coriell, Jacquelin Sorice (Sam); bonus daughters, Angelia Barry (Todd), Tammy Faulkner (Spencer); a multitude of grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of loving friends and family.
The Lindsey family will receive guests on Thursday, August 21, 2025, in the Holly Pond Funeral Home Chapel from 11:30 a.m. until services begin at 3:00 p.m. where Pastor Tim Barbee will officiate. Luke will be laid to rest in Holly Pond Cemetery following services with full military honors to be rendered.
May we always remember the sacrifice of those who have served our nation and its people with grateful hearts.
