Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peeples Family Funeral Homes on Jun. 12, 2025.
Elsie Mae Carmichael, 73, entered into eternal rest on June 8, 2025, at her home, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Born on March 2, 1952, in Gary, Indiana, Elsie was the beloved daughter of Norman Clifton Mitchell and Myrtle Elizabeth Jones Mitchell. Throughout her life, she was a woman of strength, grace, and unwavering faith. True to the meaning of her name, "a pledge to God," Elsie lived her life in devotion to her faith and her calling.
Elsie received a Honorable Discharge from the Army National Guard in March 1996. She went on to dedicate many years of honorable service as a Sergeant First Class, for the Adjutant General's Department, (Accountant) and received her Certificate of Retirement from the United States Army in March 2012. Following her retirement, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, and later made
Jacksonville, Florida, her home, where her love for ministry, family, and writing flourished.
Elsie was blessed with great wisdom and a gift for ministering to others through her writing. She founded He Is In Us Ministries, a non-profit organization devoted to sharing God's word and spreading hope to those in need. Her Daily Scripture Ministry Card carried a heartfelt prayer:
"Jesus, renew and take control of my mind, heart, will, and soul, and wrap my flesh in Your precious blood, (For me to follow) There is peace, joy, and security with God's thoughts."
Elsie would often lead others in reciting this prayer, offering comfort and peace to those who were burdened, and reminding them to release their cares to Jesus.
Her life was guided by the Word of God, especially the scripture:
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all... If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." - 1 John 1:5-10
Beyond her ministry, Elsie was known for her deep compassion and generosity. She opened her heart and home to many, offering love, shelter, guidance, and support to family members and others in need. Her selfless acts changed many lives, often providing stability and hope in moments of crisis.
Among her greatest joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also deeply honored by the establishment of The Elsie Academy School in
Jacksonville, Florida, named in her honor-a lasting reflection of her passion for children, education, and building strong foundations for future generations.
Elsie is now reunited in eternity with her late husband, Clinton Earl Carmichael; her parents; and her brother, Clifton Mitchell. She leaves behind a cherished legacy carried on by her daughters, Tanya Carmichael and Tina Carmichael Carrington (Donnell); her loving sisters, Elizabeth Mitchell, Patricia Greene, Pearl Mitchell, and Shirley Mitchell; her brothers, Willie Mitchell and Norris Mitchell; her grandchildren, Xavier Hollingsworth, Aumari Smoot (Dawuane), Isaac Lewis, and Cinque Bridges; her great-grandchildren, Ahmir Smoot and Ahlani Smoot; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and all who were blessed by her presence.
A celebration of Elsie's life will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM at The Event Center at Peeples, 14165 N. Main Street, Jacksonville, with Pastor Tony Davis, Impact Church, officiating. She will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Jacksonville National Cemetery following the service. The family will receive visitors beginning at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
Though her earthly journey has come to a close, the seeds of love, faith, and hope she planted will continue to flourish and bless generations to come.
