Dr. Elvira Tomescu was born on June 16th, 1946 in Bucharest, Romania.
She was the first in her family to attend medical school in Romania where she also completed a residency in pathology. In 1979, before the fall of communism, she escaped Romania with her ex-husband, Dr. Octavian Tomescu. They spent 6 months in an Austrian refugee camp, before they were granted political asylum in America. As a foreign medical graduate, she had to repeat her residency, which she did at the renown St. Vincent s Hospital in Manhattan. Following her residency, she completed a fellowship in Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine. In 1989 she joined the Navy and completed Officer Training School. She served as Blood Bank director in various Naval Hospitals across the US and in Guam. In 2008, she retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander. She died as she lived, full of hope, perseverance, strength, and love.
Dr. Elvira Tomescu is survived by her daughter, Dr. Oana Tomescu, as well as her son Dr. Costin Tomescu and his wife, Meghan Tomescu, and their three daughters, Stela, Chloe, and Makenzie. She is also survived by her sister, Anca Nicoleta Dobrica. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Dr. Octavian Tomescu, and her parents Eugen Dan and Ecaterina Neagu Dan.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, on Thursday, September 1st, 2022, at 12 pm, with a visitation for friends and family at 11:30 am.
