Elwood Emerick Hauver, Esq, 94, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 1, 2025, at his home, surrounded by loving family.
Born on April 7, 1930, in Smithsburg, MD, he was the son of the late Emma W. (Bell) and Stanley E. Hauver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Collins; and first Wife, Joanne Devilbiss.
Elwood graduated from Hagerstown High School, class of 1948. Elwood continued his education at Gettysburg College, class of 1952.
He served in the U.S. Air Force.
After his military service, Elwood went on to his Doctorate in Law at University of Maryland, graduating in 1959.
Elwood practiced law in private practices until getting a career opportunity with the State of Maryland as a Public Defender where he retired in 1992 after 20 years of service. He would then go on working in private practice until he became an Administrative Law Judge for unemployment in Hancock, MD.
Elwood was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg, MD. He was also a member of Funkstown American Legion, Post 211. Salem Lodge #196, AF & AM, and the Hagerstown Exchange Club.
Elwood loved to farm, enjoyed hunting with his sons. After retirement, he and his wife, Sarah, enjoyed being full time RVers, having served as camp host, and he also enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Sarah (Pfaffko) Hauver; Children, James E. Hauver and wife, Gloria of Burkittsville, MD; Michael S. Hauver and wife, Katherine of Sharpsburg, MD; Mark E. Hauver and wife, Cindy, of Smithsburg, MD; and Elizabeth Hauver of Hagerstown, MD; 8 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; Step-Children, Paula Schultz and husband, Dave of Hedgesville, WV and Mark Singer and wife, Angela of Greencastle, PA; 4 Step Grandchildren; and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 10 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 N. Main St. Smithsburg, MD 21783, with Pastor Virgil Cain officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Foxville, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 N. Main St. Smithsburg, MD 21783.
