James Calhoun Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rest Haven Funeral Home & Cemetery - Hagerstown on Mar. 30, 2026.
Our much-loved husband, father, grandad, and friend, Jim Calhoun, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on July 6, 1954, he was the son of the late Bill and Jean Calhoun. Jim was a 1972 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, and a 1977 graduate of the University of Maryland.

Always the entrepreneur, Jim founded Pneuma-Tube, Inc., in 1982 and later, Institutional Replacement Hardware. He retired in 2023. Prior to that he worked for Robert F. Zeigler Air Conditioning & Heating and Danzer Metal Works.

Jim loved working outside and defending his temperamental blueberry bushes from the predations of the devious neighborhood squirrels. He was an avid camper and backpacker, completing numerous sections of the Appalachian Trail. Other interests were reading science fiction, historical fiction and nonfiction; jigsaw puzzles; watching college basketball (especially the NCAA Men's and Women's Tournaments); playing with his children and grandchildren; diner breakfasts; lending a hand with his sons' school activities, particularly as Float Master for Clear Spring High School's Reflections Show Choir; and serving as scorekeeper for the boys' Little League teams in Hagerstown and in Clear Spring. He also coached three middle school basketball teams and helped with the Hagerstown YMCA wrestling program.

Jim is survived by his wife, Debbie; sons Collin Calhoun of Big Timber, Montana; and Will Calhoun and wife, Sondra Lavigne, of Springfield, Pennsylvania. He also leaves behind two grandsons, Oliver and Sam Calhoun, of Springfield; his older brother, Mike Calhoun and wife, Cathy, of Colonial Heights, Virginia; and his sister, Gayle Waltersdorf Bentz and her husband, Rob, of Hagerstown. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his younger brother, Tim Calhoun.

Jim was our anchor-strong, caring, and endlessly patient and supportive. Never seeking the spotlight, his quiet manner and dry humor will be his legacy.

A remembrance of Jim's life will take place at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland, on Saturday, April 11, 2026. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service at noon. Jim requested that any donations in his memory be made to either the Maryland Food Bank (mdfoodbank.org/yes), or the Esophageal Cancer Awareness Network, (ecan.org).

The family would like to thank Jim's doctors and nurses at Meritus Hematology & Oncology, the John R. Marsh Cancer Center, and Hospice of Washington County for their care.
