Obituary
Emily Knapp, 73, of South Bend, IN died on Friday, March 10, 2023. She is survived by her only child, Angela (Dwayne) Schultz, and grandsons, Nolan and Connor Schultz. Her brothers, Andrew (Linda) Knapp, who live locally, and Dan (Yannick), in the UK, loved her dearly. She had many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Emily was the first born to Arthur and Betty Jane Knapp (both deceased). She attended Adams High School, Class of 1967, IUSB, Bachelor of Arts Degree 1973 and earned the degree of Master of Divinity 2006.
Emily enjoyed the beauty of nature, birds, turtles, (especially her longtime companion Michael, her pet turtle). She loved to watch all sports, especially Notre Dame football and baseball - Go Cubs! She enjoyed her retirement years painting with acrylics, and writing simple anecdotes about everyday common life. She was the Family Historian and traveled around to many libraries researching ancestry.
Emily worked many years as a computer operator at the South Bend Medical Foundation and enjoyed troubleshooting problems. In 1984, Emily volunteered at the new East Race Water Kayaking Course in South Bend until it ended in 2011. She was an official on the team of judges for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA. Kayak judging was a highlight of her life and gave her a deep appreciation for the universal connection that sports brings. Emily was a member and adjunct Minister at the First United Methodist Church in Mishawaka, IN.
She spent her final years being loved and cared for by staff and friends at the Milton Home in South Bend, with her favorite view of the St. Joseph river and the finish line of the East Race.
Emily loved purple, please try to wear purple in her honor on Thursday, March 16 as we celebrate her life, view her artwork, Olympic memorabilia, and share stories at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St. Mishawaka, IN, from 2-4 pm with a service immediately following. The service for Emily will be made available via Zoom for those joining from long distance. Please join the service by logging into Zoom and using the Meeting ID 5742551474 at 3:45 PM EST.
