Emily Sofaer Obituary

Emily Jane Sofaer, daughter of Barbara Wild and Michael Nelson, sister of Becca Wild, died Tuesday, February 28, 2023 in her Rosendale home. She was 39. Born Emily Jane Nelson in Cornwall-on-Hudson, she lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Bearsville, Saugerties, and Rosendale, New York. She was an accomplished writer, actress, and musician. She performed with many musical groups, including The Wild Poppies in Brooklyn, and opened for people such as The Virgins and Duncan Sheik. She earned her Masters of Arts in Teaching at Bard College. She taught at SUNY Ulster, and is remembered by many for her work with Family of Woodstock. At the time of her death, Ms. Sofaer worked for the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. An artist, a lifetime New Yorker, and an intellectual, Emily devoted her life to the humanities, to books, music, languages, fashion, people, and love. Her residence had a record collection in place of a television. She leaves behind no social media accounts. Survivors include parents Barbara Wild and Michael Nelson of Saugerties, and sister Becca Wild of Kingston. The family will be holding a private gathering on Saturday, March 4, and plan to hold a celebration of Emily's life for friends and family in Spring 2023. https://www.lastingmemories.com/emily-j-sofaer

Emily Jane Sofaer had a singing voice when she accompanied her dulcimer that was as pure as light.
I feel blessed to have been involved with her.

I am very grateful to have known Emily, albeit briefly. I enjoyed hearing her perspective on films, and I'm so appreciative of her kindness, patience, and thoughtfulness in our work together. I am sad to have missed getting to know someone who had so much to offer the world. Sending kind thoughts and condolences to Emily's loved ones.

Even after a few brief chats in the parking lot, I could tell Emily was someone who greatly enjoyed all of the beauty this world offers. She seemed excited about her evenings and weekends no matter what she had planned...I got the feeling she was someone who knew how to enjoy each experience, each moment, to the fullest. She will be missed and I am deeply sorry to her family for their loss.

I didn't know Emily for very long, but she will forever be in my memory as a warm, kind, generous and enthusiastic person. She contacted me about participating in a project even before she started working at Cary. I was so looking forward to working with her. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed. Please know that she will not be forgotten.
