E. Irene Powell, 97 of Washington, died on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Standish Assisted Living in Washington, where she resided.
She was born February 18, 1928, in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Edward Roy Powell and Minnie Louella Johnson Powell of Washington.
Irene was a 1947 graduate of the former Claysville High School.
She worked at the former Hazel-Atlas #2 Glass Plant for 13 years. She went on to work at Washington Hospital for 26 years as a Certified Operating Technologist, retiring in 1990.
Irene was a member of the West Alexander Legion Auxiliary Post 656 since 1949. She was also a member of Buffalo Grange #1523 for over 55 years. She was active in the Martha Washington Garden Club as well as Friendship Community Church.
In addition to her parents, Irene is predeceased by brothers John W. Powell of Claysville and Harold Edward Powell Sr. of Charlotte, North Carolina; and niece Sandra (surviving Bruce) Fowler of Matthews, North Carolina.
She is survived by nephews Harold E. (Linda) Powell Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina and David W. (Darlene) Powell of Claysville; nieces Kathryn “Kay” McCulley (Harold L McCulley deceased) of West Alexander, Linda (Robert) Altieri of Wayne and Susan M. Powell of Claysville; and 32 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Irene also leaves behind many “special” friends and care givers at the Standish Assisted Living whose love and thoughtful attention meant so much to Irene during her 20 months residence there.
She was the last of her immediate family.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2025 from in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
