Erich Bernhard, age 88, of Spring Grove, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Erich was born on Thursday, November 5, 1936, in Tacherting, Germany, to Franz and Maria (Wagenbaver) Bernhard. On July 20, 1963, he married the love of his life, Marianne Kinzer.
Erich's lifelong passion for baking began in Germany, where he attended a bakery trade school and perfected his craft. After moving to the United States with his family, they settled in Chicago, where he landed his first job at Imperial Bakery. His talent and dedication eventually led him to the Sara Lee Corporation where he worked as an experimental baker, developing an array of sweet treats and confections. Erich remained with the company for many years, retiring in 1996. Erich was a proud and active member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Antioch, where he became affectionately known as "the baker man" for always sharing his delicious pastries and baked goods. Outside of the bakery, Erich was an avid golfer and proudly displayed two of his tournament trophies and maintained his very own golf putting green in his backyard. He loved to stay active-often seen riding his bike around the neighborhood, making friends with his warm smile and friendly spirit. He also enjoyed cross-country skiing in his younger years and traveling the world with Marianne. Together, they visited many places, especially their beloved hometowns in Germany. Some of their fondest memories were family road trips in the big green Buick to Colorado and Pikes Peak-adventures that remain cherished by his family to this day.
Erich was a huge fan of Elvis Presley and loved to channel "The King" whenever he could. He never missed an opportunity to dress like Elvis and bring a smile to those around him, often visiting places around town decked out in his signature Elvis style. A devoted husband, a hands-on father, and a deeply loved Opa; his warmth, kindness, and love for his family were unwavering. He touched the lives of everyone who knew him and will be missed beyond measure. Although this is not a formal affair, because Erich loved wearing and collecting bow ties- also known as "butterfly ties", we kindly encourage everyone joining us on Saturday to wear a bow tie in his honor. Let's celebrate him with a touch of his classic style.
Survived by his daughter, Susan; son Steve, grandson, Ryan; sister Rosa (John) Ernst; many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Erich will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m.
Celebration of A Life Well Lived service at Thompson Spring Grove Funeral Home, 8103 Wilmot Road, Spring Grove, IL.
