It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew Bernhard, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on August 23, 1958, in Marion, Ohio, Matthew led a life marked by love, dedication, and a spirited enthusiasm for his interests. He left this world on October 27, 2025, at the age of 67.
Matthew was proud to serve his country as a Navy veteran from 1980 -1988 and was a firefighter on a Navy Ship. He traveled the world, had Pekiy Duck in Hong Kong, Rode elephants in Thailand . After completing his education as a 1976 graduate of Elgin High School, For a period of his life he was a bus driver for head start and was called Mr. Matt!.
A passionate family man, Matthew cherished the moments spent with his beloved wife, Nancy of 32 years and their five exceptional children: Matthew (Monica) Bernhard Jr., Elleair Basford, Sinnitta (Storme Pelfrey) Bernhard, and Stephanie (Josh) Tennar, along with Marina (Ryan Millisor) Bernhard. His legacy continues to thrive through his grandchildren Aareon, Isaac, Kenna, Violet, Stormi, Lofton, Jude, Gigi, Charlie and Penelope each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Matthew's personality shone brightly in everything he did; he was a devoted Buckeye fan, proudly cheering for his team. His love for music, especially classic rock, inspired him to collect hats and books dedicated to his favorite rock stars, embracing the nostalgia they brought him. An avid cook, he delighted in gathering loved ones around the dinner table, sharing not only meals but also laughter and cherished memories. Matthew had a zest for life that extended to his hobbies, including riding motorcycles as a proud member of the Harley Owners Group. He also enjoyed watching westerns, feeling a connection to the sense of adventure they portrayed.
A graveside service honoring Matthew's life will take place at Marion Cemetery, located at 620 Delaware Avenue, Marion, Ohio 43302, on November 3, 2025, at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friend and stories at 2 PM at Marion Enterprise Baptist Church, 130 Orton, Marion. Those who knew him will understand the profound impact he had on their lives, and he will be deeply missed.
Donations made be made to Y Men Service Club, P.O. Box 275, Marion, OH 43301-0275 in Honor of Matthew.
Matthew Bernhard's journey was one defined by love and connection, and his spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends. As we reflect upon his life, we celebrate the joy he brought to those around him and the unyielding legacy of kindness he leaves behind.
