Funeral service for former Frederick resident, Erma Degan, age 95, of Altus, Oklahoma, will be at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 4, 2024, at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel, 921 West Gladstone Avenue, Frederick, Oklahoma with Rev. Les Banks officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mrs. Degan passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the English Village Manor in Altus, Oklahoma.
Erma Lee Kersey was born on April 17, 1929, north of Laing School, to Asa Earl and Mary Lee (Murphy) Kersey. She attended Manitou Public School and graduated from Manitou High School with the Class of 1947. She was Valedictorian of her 8th and 12th grade classes. She was united in marriage to James Ralph Degan on October 3, 1947, in Vernon, Texas. Erma began working for John Hartwig at the Abstract Office, prior to working for Bill Miller at the Assessor's Office. In 1968, she became Tillman County Assessor, where she later retired. Erma and James loved fishing, camping, and travelling their entire married life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Frederick. Erma served as pianist for Tesca and Trinty Baptist Churches, and numerous other churches throughout the years.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Degan and his wife Lois of Madill, Oklahoma, and Larry Degan and his wife Dianne of Ponca City, Oklahoma; one brother, Jerry Kersey and his wife Pearlyn of Temple, Texas; six grandchildren, Kindra Ard and her husband Jim of Frederick, Oklahoma, Audra Sherman and her husband Chris of Amarillo, Texas, Allison Stroud and her husband Travis of Tishomingo, Oklahoma, Lauren Craig and her husband Chris of Piedmont, Oklahoma, Michael Degan and his wife Abigail of McPherson, Kansas, and Josh Degan of Lawton, Oklahoma; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Ryan Ard and his wife Julie, Kyle Ard, Ethan Sherman, Trace Sherman, Taylor Stroud, Kanna Stroud, Blaire Stroud, Cade Craig, Cole Craig, Cooper Craig, Crue Craig, Madilynn Degan, and Rebecca Degan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Asa and Mary Kersey; one daughter, Janice (Degan) Porter; one son, Jack Degan; and her husband James Degan who preceded her in death on May 21, 2005.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice in memory of Erma Lee Degan.
