Ernest Eichwald, lovingly known as Ernie or Ernesto, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, in Corrales, New Mexico, at the age of 81.
Born on May 22, 1943, in Cuba, New Mexico, Ernie was the beloved son of Alex and Serafina Eichwald. He graduated from Los Lunas High School in the Class of 1962 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in education from the University of New Mexico in 1973, later completing his Masters in Coursework there as well.
Ernie served his country with pride in the Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Private First Class before receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. That same year, he married the love of his life, Maria Elena Talavera, on May 31 in Los Angeles. Together, they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, raising a loving family and creating a lifetime of memories.
A devoted educator, Ernie worked for Albuquerque Public Schools for over 30 years and was an active member of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation for just as long. He believed deeply in the power of education and made a lasting impact on generations of students and fellow educators.
Ernie had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid hunter. In his quiet moments, he enjoyed reading and spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria Elena Talavera; his parents, Alex and Serafina Eichwald; and his brothers, A. Cristobal Eichwald and Lawrence Eichwald.
He is survived by his sons, Rodrigo Eichwald (Theresa) of Albuquerque, and Alejandro Eichwald (Trish) of Corrales; his four cherished grandchildren: Payton (22), Gabriela (17), Lexi (17), and Devin (17); and his brother, Tomas Eichwald.
A memorial service to honor Ernie’s life will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Home, located at 4310 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. A reception will follow at Sandia Bar at 4:30 p.m., where family and friends are invited to share stories and celebrate his legacy.
Ernie will be remembered for his warm heart, unwavering dedication to education, and deep love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and service.
