Dr. Ernest Noel Henry

Abingdon, VA – Dr. Ernest Noel Henry, age 62, passed on Monday, December 12, 2022, with his family by his side at home. Dr. Henry was born in England and moved to Limerick, Ireland at the age of three. He was a graduate of Ard Scoil Ris Secondary School in Limerick, Ireland and earned his doctorate from University College Cork. He moved to Washington D.C. and completed his nephrology fellowship at Georgetown University. Dr. Henry then relocated to Southwest Virginia in 1992 where he started his own practice. He began with Lebanon Medical Group, then to Abingdon Internal Medicine, and on to Hibernian Nephrology Group. Dr. Henry was the Medical Director for both Lebanon and Abingdon Dialysis Units.
It was in Abingdon that he met his wife of 20 years, Lorraine Dyson Henry, who was also born in England. He enjoyed many walks with Lorraine on the Virginia Creeper Trail and spending time with their family, especially his grandchildren. Dr. Henry was an avid soccer fan and Manchester United was the team he supported. He was preceded in death by his father, Patrick Henry.
Dr. Henry is survived by his wife, Lorraine Dyson Henry; his mother, Celine Henry of Limerick, Ireland; three sons, Alex Challinor and girlfriend Laura of Denver, CO, Neil Henry and wife Rose of Durham, NC, and Shane Henry and wife Hannah of Durham, NC; two daughters, Katie Humphreys and husband Todd of Abingdon, VA, and Sarah Henry and boyfriend Ben of Seattle, WA; brothers, Dr. Michael Henry and wife Dr. Deidre Henry of Cork Ireland, and Brian Henry and husband John Toher of Limerick, Ireland; sister, Ann Henry of Limerick, Ireland; special grandchildren, Rory Humphreys and Sid Humphreys; sister-in-law, Susan Yarrow and husband Kevin of Rotherham, England; sister-in-law, Sally Dyson of Rotherham, England; brother-in-law, Barry Dyson and wife Jayne of Rotherham, England; special friend, Dr. Jennifer Jonkers; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ireland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Creeper Trail Conservancy, P.O. Box 2382, Abingdon, VA, 24212, in Dr. Henry's name.
