Ernest Matthew ”Ernie” “Sonny” Chonko

Ernest Matthew Chonko, passed away on Valentines Day February 14, 2026, in Webster, Florida, at the age of 64, the day that broke all our hearts. Born March 6, 1961, in Elyria, Ohio, to Ernest S. Chonko and Margaret D. Chonko, Ernie lived a life defined by laughter, loyalty, and a knack for making the ordinary unforgettable.

A proud graduate of Seminole High School, Ernie went on to become a true self-made man, building Ernie’s Welding and Fabricating, INC into what it is today. Through grit, skill, and determination, he forged not just metal, but a reputation for excellence and integrity that followed him everywhere.

On April 9, 1983, he married the love of his life, Kimberley S Chonko, beginning a partnership filled with devotion, humor, and countless shared adventures. Together they raised three daughters, and their partners, who were his pride and joy: Tiffany Chonko (Gabriel Torres), Amy Chonko (James White), and Jessica Chonko (Daniel Sutterfield). He was a proud grandfather to Zakkary Torres Chonko, who struck a special chord in his heart. Ernie is also survived by his sisters Debra Pugliese, Laurie Bottino, and Donna Butler, and his loyal Newfoundland companion, Thor.

Ernie was a man of many passions. He was a whiskey aficionado, a purveyor of anything we even slightly mentioned, and a lover of hunting, motorcycles, and classic cars. A true jack of all trades and master of most, he could fix, build, or figure out just about anything. Yet some of his happiest moments were the simplest ones, sitting on the front porch or in the garage sipping on some Jack, greeting the world like an old friend.

He will be remembered for his unmistakable laugh, his social-butterfly spirit, his high standards, and his readiness to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. And of course, for those bright colored shirts that seemed to match the warmth he carried everywhere he went.

Ernie’s life was one well lived, well loved, and well laughed. His presence made days brighter, stories better, and people feel at home. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, kindness, humor, and a family who will carry his spirit forward with pride.

In true Ernie fashion, a larger than life celebration of life is being planned. Details are still in the works and will be announced soon, so stay tuned and get ready to raise a glass, tell a story, and celebrate the way he deserves.
