Ervin devoted much of his life to music education and performance. He served as the Director of Bands at Bismarck State College from 1969 until his retirement in 1997. He had a deep passion for promoting music and was especially proud of his involvement with the International Music Camp near Bottineau, North Dakota. Through this work, he traveled to Europe representing the International Ambassadors of Music and helped provide musical opportunities for countless students and musicians.
Ervin was involved with many area bands, including the BJC Bagpipe Band, the North Dakota State Legion Band, and the Bismarck Elks Band.
In retirement, Ervin continued to share his love of music through his work with Eckroth Music and Jacobson Music. He also remained active in the community through his work at Eastgate Funeral Service.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; children: Mark (Theresa) Ely, Stephen (Karen) Ely, Becky (John) Hild, and David Ely; grandchildren, Alissa (Adam) VanDoorne, Samantha (Patrick) Abraham, John Sandven, Matthew Ely, and Katie Ely; and six great-grandchildren; Sister-in-law, Nancy Ely and Audrey Ely; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Alice Ely; his brothers, Francis and Robert; his sister, Betty; and his first wife, Rosemary Ely.
