Esther Lillian Bufferd Watstein passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, at her home, in Stratford, Connecticut, shortly after celebrating her 98th birthday.
She lived a remarkably active life, working in the archives at Housatonic Community College well into her 90s. She loved her family and friends and was an avid bridge player, a Life Master who played weekly in both in-person and online games. She spent many evenings and weekends needlepointing while watching her favorite television shows and movies. She also cherished the arts in all forms, from museum exhibitions to works created by friends, and delighted in dance, theatre, and music of every kind.
Her home in Stratford brought her great joy, overlooking the Housatonic River as boats passed by. By water and land, she traveled widely, including trips to Cuba, China, and Africa, among many other destinations.
She is survived by her children, Rachel Edith Watstein of New York City and Sarah Barbara Watstein of Seattle; and her grandchildren, Samuel Caporal, Coco Caporal, and Jack Caporal. She was predeceased by her daughter, Miriam Joan Watstein. She is also survived by Miriam's former spouse, John Caporal.
