Esther I. Bunger was born on January 31, 1941, near Davis, SD, on the Bunger Farm, the daughter of Ernest H. and Tena (Harms) Bunger.
Esther attended Stoddard rural school and graduated from Hurley High School in 1959, then went on to Dakota State, (General Beadle) earning a degree in Elementary Education to become a teacher. She married Wilmer Thompson on August 10, 1963, in Hurley, SD and she became a farm wife. They were married for many years until Wilmer passed away on May 29, 2001. They enjoyed working on the farm and taking a trip to Rapid City every summer.
Esther was a member of the Lake County Extension club, worked at Prairie Village during the jamboree as treasurer of the Prairie Village women's club. She loved making quilts and aprons for Prairie Village, crafts for Lake County Extension, and she liked to sew and was very creative with many other things, especially ceramics and embroidery.
Esther attended West Center Baptist Church where she helped with children bible school and many other church functions.
Remaining to cherish Esther are her sister, Thelma Mikkelsen of Hurley, and her aunt Jenola Olesen of Aberdeen, nieces and nephews: Teresa Mikkelsen, Luke Mikkelsen (Bridget) and Joe (Jill) Mikkelsen, Peggy (Roger) Kranz, Michele (Jerry) Mohr and Rosemary Thompson, and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
