Ethel Shepard Obituary

Visit the Sayles Funeral Home website to view the full obituary.

On Tuesday night, January 20, during a dazzling display of the Northern Lights, Ethel Idella Shepard became one of the brightest stars in the sky. With her loving companions by her side, she left this earth peacefully and in comfort.

Edie was born to her parents Everett and Nina (Bourn) Maxham in Bennington, Vermont on August 15, 1948. She was raised in Bennington along with her five siblings. While she lived in several other areas of the State, Edie always considered Bennington her home.

In 1986 Edie married Robert L. Shepard, the love of her life. They lived in Burlington for many years until his death in 2010. During her life Edie worked in various capacities as a caregiver, at a fishery, and with children. She loved spending time with children, her eyes sparkling with delight whenever they were in her presence.

Edie was joyful. Not just on occasion. She was joyful every morning, afternoon, and evening. While she had her moments of sadness and grief over the loss of her husband and family members, those moments were brief. Edie had a smile on her face, joy in her step, and love for every person she met. It is not hyperbole to say that she brightened the day of every person met. She loved shopping, eating out, meeting new people, dancing, singing, listening to country music and oldies, and flirting with men.

In addition to her loving caregivers at Cedar Lane (NKHS), Edie is survived by her sisters, Sharon Raymond of St. Albans, and Claire McCaughey of Arlington. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Everett, Burt, and Clifford Maxham.

Much appreciation goes out to Northeast Kingdom Human Services and the wonderful caregivers there. The love they shared with Edie was constant and true. She will be deeply missed.

A burial service for Edie will take place at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 11:00 AM
