On April 11, 2023, God called his servant home.
Eugene William Angton, Sr., was born on October 12th, 1951, to Mr. Eugene Angton and Mrs. Willie Mae Payne Angton in Palestine, Texas. He was the oldest of four children and he was a gifted young musician, playing trumpet in the Circle City Classic of 1965. When his mother suddenly passed, he was raised by his two aunts, Ms. Ora Lee, and Ms. Pat Henry.
He graduated with honors from Palestine High School in 1970.
Soon after graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Strasbourg, Germany. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1978. Upon his return, he settled in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then became employed as a corrections officer at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange, Kentucky. There, he met the love of his life, Mrs. Shelia May Harris, and they were married on March 2, 1990. He became the Unit Administrator there and was the first African American to do so. He was also a board member of the EEOC and NAACP. Even while working full-time, he also worked at the Tingly Men's Center for Volunteers of America part-time. He retired in 2004.
Even though he stopped working full-time, it did not stop his quest for more knowledge. He received a bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies from Sullivan University and obtained a master's in counseling as well as certification in Restorative Justice. His passion in life was to see the justice system work fairly for those who were disadvantaged.
As a great man of faith, he was an ordained deacon at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church for many years. His relationship with Christ grew even stronger as he made Temple of Faith Baptist Church his home with his family in 2021. His last Resurrection Sunday could be considered his best. He had a spirit of peace and joy over him, interacting with all family members. He passed away on April 11, 2023. He was always known to be a wise, strong man, a leader, someone who had a grasp of current events, and a sharp dresser. He was a devoted family man and a great protector. He will be greatly missed.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Eugene and Willie Mae Angton. He is survived by his wife, Shelia Angton; one brother, Jerry (Anita) Angton; two sisters, Linda Faye and Evelyn Angton; one son, Eugene, Ir.; eight daughters, Lashaunta Scott-Roberts, Jocelyn Angton, Erica (Roderick) McCrea, Delrecia (Alfonzo) Northington, Theresa Angton, Kristin (Jason) Zar, Brittany (Christian) Blackburn and Angela Angton; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, church members, and loved ones.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Louisville Memorial Gardens East, 11601 Ballardsville Road, Louisville KY 40241. A funeral service in Eugene's honor will begin on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Temple of Faith Baptist Church, 1703 Bicknell Avenue, Louisville KY 40215.
