I worked as a summer law clerk for Judge Austin in 1998 and remember him as respectful, fair, and an extremely kind man. He liked to joke that he hired me for our Penn State connection. Prayers to his family.

I am so shocked and saddened to learn of Gene's passing. We sat next to each other in Physics class at Teaneck High School, and we both did our undergraduate work at Penn State. When my first husband, Milt Schwartz, was alive, we used to take our daughter Bonnie to swim meets, and we sometimes ran into Gene. The last time we saw each other was at one of our Teaneck High School class reunions.
My sincere condolences to Eileen and his whole family, and may his memory be a blessing.

To Eileen, Michelle, Scott and family, We were so saddened to hear the news about Gene's passing. He was certainly one of the good guys!! For years, we kept the paper he gave us about attitude by Charles Swindoll on our refrigerator...it was full of wise words, as I think Gene was too. He was also a lot of fun! Our sincere condolences to all of you.

To the family of the Honorable Eugene Austin, J.S.C.:
I wanted to let you know how profoundly sorry I am to hear about the judge's passing. I appeared before Judge Austin countless times in my days as an Assistant Prosecutor - in fact, I tried my first case before him. He was a good man and always treated me kindly.
Many years ago, when I first came to my office, my boss hired me as a probationary prosecutor. He wanted to see my work before he decided to hire me as a long-term assistant prosecutor. I worked really hard and got the official title after about 6 months. The day I got the nod about the full-time position, Judge Austin called me on the phone to congratulate me and to wish me well. I was blown away that he took the time to think about me, but that is the kind of guy that he was. He was thoughtful, compassionate, and professional.
He will be missed.

Oft times, we would reminisce about THS. As a municipal prosecutor he was a worthy trial adversary. As a Judge he was firm, and compassionate when appropriate. Attorneys always knew he gave his best and his ear. His door was always open to us.
We have memories!
