In Remembrance of Eugene Charles Calcaterra
Eugene "Gene" Calcaterra passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, in
Mandeville, LA, at the age of 80. All who knew him can attest to his never-ending kindness, concern for others, devotion to his family, and above all else, continual support of the University of Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue!).
Born on April 11, 1945, and raised in St. Claire Shores, Michigan, by Albert and Rose Calcaterra, Gene grew up knowing the importance of faith and family. He attended Sacred Heart Seminary as well as Wayne State University. Following his academic endeavors, he joined the United States Navy, finishing his 4-year military career aboard the USS Hyman. After his service, he began what would become a 50-plus-year career in finance. He was known by many customers and colleagues for his guiding compassion and commitment.
Gene's greatest pride, however, was his family. 55 years ago, he married his soulmate, Janet Couvillon Calcaterra, and he often referred to her as "My Bride". Together, they built a family and a home around the singular values of love and belonging. He was the beloved "Poppa" to his grandchildren and would always lend a listening ear. Through the years, their home has been, and continues to be, a place of comfort for all who gather.
Gene is survived by the following family members: his wife, Janet; his children, Reneé Calcaterra Giardina and Paul Calcaterra; his son-in-law, John Giardina; his grandchildren, Courtney Giardina Lawler, her spouse Zach Lawler as well as Brittney Giardina and Lynsey Giardina; his sister, Marilyn Calcaterra; his brother, Albert "Al" Calcaterra, and his wife, Grace Calcaterra; his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings, Phillip Calcaterra and Linda Calcaterra Wright.
A celebration of Gene's life will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans. The visitation starts at 11:00 AM, and a Mass will follow promptly at 1:00 PM. Services will conclude with a burial at the gravesite.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the
American Heart Association.
