Eugene Chavis, 85, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at his residence in Verona.
He was born on April 24, 1938, in Winton, NC to the late Alfred T. Weaver and Bettie V. Chavis.
Throughout his life, Eugene exemplified honor and dedication, especially during his service in the military. Eugene served in the United States Air Force with distinction, with two tours in Vietnam, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After twenty years of committed and selfless service to his country, he retired honorably.
He worked for nineteen years at Unifi, dedicating himself to general plant maintenance. After that, he spent three and a half years at Target.
In his leisure time, Eugene found joy in connecting with fellow veterans and serving his community. He was a valued member of the Verona VFW 10826, the American Legion, and the DAV. His passion for supporting his comrades and giving back to society leaves a legacy.
In addition to his military achievements, Eugene was a loving family man. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his surviving family members. As the last surviving member of his immediate family, Eugene is mourned by those who knew him best.
He is survived by his daughters, Regina LaToya Chavis (Curvey) and Nicole Chavis Hamilton (Eric); his grandchildren, Raegan Bell, Devin Bell, Dylan Thompson, and Brandon Hamilton; his great-grandchildren, Kamila and Kamani; his niece, Debbie Moore (Marcellus); his nephew, Charles “Chuckie” Chavis and (Toni); his niece, Lynda “Jackie” Pierce Broadnax (Howard); his nephew, Douglas Wayne Pierce (Laquitta); and additional nieces, nephews, and cousins including his special cousins, Wanda Ashe Tyler (Charles).
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Lillie Mae Melton Chavis; his sister Thelma Pierce; his brother, Percy “Chuck” Chavis; and nephews, Milton T. Pierce and Donald D. Pierce.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
A chapel service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 25, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home with the Reverend Marvin Melton officiating.
Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton, with military honors by the United States Air Force.
