Eugene T. Gene Higgs, 81, of Fishersville, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024, at his home, peacefully surrounded by family after a brief illness.
He was born in Hagerstown, MD. on September 30, 1942, to the late Carl Thurston and Rachel Younkins Higgs.
Gene graduated from Hagerstown High School and complete a B.S. in Math from Bridgewater College. He served in the army National Guard 329th Regional Support Group, Virginia Beach, VA., for 23 years. He worked as a Project Manager in Human Resources with the Virginia Department of Transportation; he served as one of eight trainers in the state.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sandra Fullen Higgs; a stepson, Travis Baker; his sisters-in-law, Laura Higgs of Cambridge, MD, and Peggy Houchins of Martinsburg, WV; his nieces, Ami Parks and Doug of Cambridge, MD and Kari Rood and Bryan of St. Petersburg, FL; his grandchildren, Mallory Baker of Parkersburg, WV and Seth Baker of Lewisburg, WV; his great-nieces and nephews, Sierra Parks, Canin Parks, Mackenzie Rood, and Ashby Rood.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin Higgs.
Gene enjoyed golf, tennis, reading and spending time with family and close friends, including Jim Brooks and Harry Marshall.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Rob Marsh and Lauren Gochenour of the Hospice of the Shenandoah, as well as the caregivers who were with him over the last several weeks.
