Eugene W Hughes Sr was born August 7th, 1943 in Cambridge NY. He grew up in Hoosick Falls NY and attended Hoosick Falls Central School until the 11th grade when he joined the United States Navy, where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D Roosevelt as Boilerman Third Class during the Vietnam era from 1961 to 1965. He spent most of his enlistment in the Mediterranean Sea.
In 1963, he married his high school sweetheart Charleen Arnold.
After being honorably discharged from the USN, he was hired on at Oak Industries, a manufacturing facility in Hoosick Falls NY. After 18 years at Oak, he moved his family to Dunlap, TN where he worked in self-supporting work at Stone Cave Farms in Dunlap. From there, he was hired on at Farley's Ace Hardware in Dunlap, where he became known as
"the Ace man" until his retirement in August 2013.
He is preceded in death by his father George Hughes Sr, his mother Dorothy Mary Cambell, brother George Hughes Jr, and by his sisters Dorothy Ratigan and Helen L Cone.
He leaves behind Charleen, his wife of 62 years, his son Eugene (Gene) Hughes Jr, and his daughters Rebecca Hughes and Willow LeBay; his granddaughters Savannah Hathaway, Moriah Smith and Elania Whitt; four great-grandchildren Tinsley and Aiden Hathaway, Stratton Tate and Locklyn Smith.
