Eugene Saul Levy age 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 18, 2024. Preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Levy, parents, Isaac and Mae Levy; siblings Joyce (Herb) Marsden. Survived by his sister, Barbara (Donald) Feinstein; wife, Arlene Brilliant Levy; sons, David (Judy) Levy, Michael Levy, Larry Levy, Jeremy (Jennifer) Brilliant; stepdaughters, Robin (Tom) Lennon, Barbara (Dave) Chu, Abby (Aaron) Lawson; grandchildren, Adam (Alex), Julia, Stephanie (CJ), Alyssa (Joe), Xander (Cris), Eos, Zac, Rachel, Jacob, Joshua, Julian; great grandchildren Eli, Walter, and Madelyn.
Gene was born in 1930 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New York University earning a bachelor's degree in science and master's degree in education. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for two years. Upon an honorable discharge, he married his first wife Gloria and they moved to Long Island, New York where they raised their family. In 1977, he tragically lost Gloria after an extended battle with cancer. In 1979, Gene married Arlene Brilliant and moved to Worthington, Ohio.
Gene spent more than two decades teaching industrial arts to junior high school students in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District. Subsequent jobs included working for the State of Ohio as an industrial rehabilitation specialist and a position with the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics.
Gene was a passionate volunteer. He served as president and head of the board of education at the Suffolk Jewish Center on Long Island, and on numerous committees at Beth Tikvah, in Worthington, Ohio. He donated numerous (too many to count) gallons of blood to the American Red Cross and often proudly wore a "gallons donated" lapel pin. In later years, he delivered food for Meals on Wheels. He also held a variety of volunteer positions at Brookdale Trillium Crossing.
Gene loved his family, and he loved people. He truly didn't know a stranger and greeted everyone he met with a smile and jovial salutation, while holding a door open. His glass was perpetually half full, and his positive attitude was infectious. He had a huge green thumb and found great joy in the garden when he wasn't crafting something out of wood or leather. In the kitchen he was a master baker-making mouth wateringly good challah and cheesecake.
He took great joy in solving puzzles-both jigsaw and crossword--and read the newspaper from front to back every day. He enjoyed a daily scotch and loved going on walks.
A memorial service in his honor will take place Monday, April 22, 2024, at Brookdale Trillium Crossing, 3500 Trillium Crossing, Columbus, Ohio at 11:00 am with a graveside service at 2:00pm at Green Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene's memory may be made to The American Red Cross.
