NEWPORT – Eugene H. Mankouski, 92, of Farrell Road, died on June 22, 2022 at Little Falls Hospital.
Eugene was born on April 9, 1930 in Hempstead, Long Island to the late Joseph and Stella (Ludzinski) Mankouski. He moved with his family to the Newport area at an early age. He graduated in June 1948 from West Canada Valley Schools, as salutatorian of his senior class. On June 18, 1960, Eugene was united in marriage with the Jane C. Kopyt at the former St. Patrick's Church, Utica. Eugene owned and operated a dairy farm in the Town of Newport, he was an exceptional herdsman. He worked with a professor from Cornell University to set up a selective breeding program for his herd of Holstein cattle. He was highly respected in the dairy farming community and was an active member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO). He retired from dairy farming in 1987 and built a new home with his wife Jane. He had various part time jobs to keep busy during his retirement and especially enjoyed working for the United States Census Bureau. Eugene was a member of St. John's Church.
Gene enjoyed socializing and going to dances with his wife Jane, they met at a dance. They enjoyed several trips to the Northeast coast and loved visiting the ocean. Gene was an avid birder and wildlife watcher. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. He designed and maintained beautiful gardens at his dairy farm and at his retirement home. He planted many trees for future generations to enjoy. He will be remembered for his building abilities and helping everyone with their home projects. He helped both of his sons build their homes and his daughter with home projects. Gene enjoyed the many cats and dogs he had throughout his life, especially his Collie mix Ginger, German Shepard Heidi, and Abyssinian Tye.
His beloved wife Jane preceded him in death on April 18, 2017.
Survivors include three children, Kevin (Roxann) Mankouski of
Suffield, CT, David Mankouski of Newport, and Janine (Mark) Kozak of Cicero; six grandchildren, Connor, Austin, Evan, Shana, Carmen and McKayla; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Edmund) Catrine of Schenectady, and Karen Price and Frances Whipple, both of Utica; brother-in-law, John Kopyt of Utica; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Eugene was predeceased by eight siblings, Frank, William, Charles, Joseph, Henry, and Stephen Mankouski, Janet Richardson, and Helen Jeff.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the inurnment and committal service at St. John's Cemetery, Newport on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Deacon Jim Bower, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport.
