Gene J. Szweda, 89, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Gene was born on January 9, 1936, in South Bend, to the late Chester and Genevieve (Nowak) Szweda. He is preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses; brothers, Jerry (Monica) Szweda, Richard (June) Szweda; sister, Dorothy (Bill) Dyer; his brothers-in-law, Al (Betty) Mackowiak, Joseph (Virginia) Mackowiak, Clement (Mary Jane) Mackowiak; and sisters-in-law, Mary Mackowiak, and Henrietta (Victor) Gerbasich.

Left to cherish the memory of Gene is the love of his life of 69 years, Georgianna Szweda (Mackowiak); children; Chris (Rita) Szweda, Cheryl (Mike) Watford, Colleen (Todd) Lane; grandchildren, Ashley Stoffl, Melissa (Paul) Horvath, Kyle (Hannah) Watford, Aubrie (Brian) Lares, Evan (Kyla) Lane; great-grand-daughters, Lucy Stoffl; Marin, Nora and Clementine Horvath; Alaina and Maddyn Lares.

Gene retired from Bendix Corporation where he worked as the director of maintenance for the trucking division. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was a lifelong Notre Dame fan, especially football and women's basketball. He grew up on the west side of South Bend and was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church. After moving, Gene became a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, July 11, 2025, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Rd., Granger, with a visitation beginning at 9:00 am in the church. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph cemetery.

Donations in honor of Gene Szweda may be made out to the Center for Hospice.
