Eugene Wallenfang Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 16, 2025.
Eugene "Gene" Wallenfang, 89, a lifelong resident of Suamico, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, after a short battle with cancer. Gene was born on September 4, 1935, to Raymond and Martha (Bittner) Wallenfang. Gene graduated from Pulaski High School with the class of 1953. Gene married Judy Calewarts at St. John the Baptist church in Howard on May 2, 1959. They were able to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren last May.
After graduation, Gene joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge, Gene began working for Calewarts Meat Market in Suamico, a job he really enjoyed and continued to work for them on a part-time basis for many years after he started his employment with Wisconsin Public Service. Gene retired from WPS in 1997 with 32 years of service. After his retirement for WPS Gene worked part time for several years for Klemm Tank Lines in Howard.
In retirement, Gene enjoyed gardening and growing apples, with a large garden that provided many fruits and vegetables for his family. He was always looking for a new variety of apple tree to grow. Gene enjoyed pheasant hunting and twice a year would make trips to South Dakota with his hunting buddies and would always come home with a limit of birds from hunting prime ground, owned by the rancher friends they made in South Dakota. Gene also liked deer hunting and looked forward to spending time at his cabin in Athelstane where the highlight of the year was getting the crew together for deer hunting with big meals, plenty of card playing and lots of stories told. In his later years, Gene really looked forward to gathering with his group of friends for weekly card playing on Wednesday afternoons at Chambers Hill.
But most of all, Gene enjoyed his family, whether it was the traditional Labor Day weekend at the cabin or just a Sunday cookout, any day with his grandkids, and more recently the great grandkids, was a good day.
Gene is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, Scott (Renee) (Sobieski), Jeff (Minnesota), Brad (Carla) (Tomahawk); grandchildren, Miranda (John) Cretens (Howard), Sarah (Jason) Strunk (Little Suamico), Ryan Wallenfang (Howard), Michael, Elizabeth and Luke Wallenfang (Missouri), Quin Wallenfang (special friend Isabel) (Colorado) and Elena Wallenfang (Illinois); great grandchildren, Kaylee and Callum Strunk and Cameron Cretens. Gene is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat Boehm (Suamico), Roger Calewarts (Amberg), Pam Hedtke (Oconto Falls) and Dean (Sue) Calewarts (Oconto).
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
Per Gene's wishes a private prayer service was held with his family. Interment at the Fort Howard Mausoleum.
Gene's family would like to thank all the wonderful people at Emerald Bay Assisted Living and Moments Hospice for their kind and compassionate care over the last several months.
