Eugene Washington Rhodes Campbell, affectionally known in college as "Rock", was born in Tallahassee, Florida on November 19, 1947 to the late Dr. Wilburn Arthur Campbell, Sr. and Marjorie Elizabeth Skinner Campbell. He was the younger brother of Dr. Wilburn Arthur Campbell, Jr. and an alter boy at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church. He departed this life on March 30, 2022.
As a child and teenager, Eugene loved the outdoors. In 1961, he was a member of the Order of the Arrow honor society of the Boy Scouts of America where he honorably earned the God and Country award. He was also the youngest scout in the state of Florida to earn the Eagle Scout award, which is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program. He attended Florida A&M University High School in Tallahassee, Florida where he graduated in 1964.
Upon graduation from Florida A&M University High School, he enrolled in Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia where he received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration and economics in 1968.
His tenacity enabled him to pay for his own college expenses through scholarships, securing life-guard jobs and working in restaurants part-time.
Immediately after graduating from Morehouse, Eugene spent his summer attending the IBM graduate studies program at their headquarters in New York and worked in the office products/data processing division. In 1969, he then moved to Chicago to pursue his master's degree at the University of Chicago. While there, he was drafted into the United States Army, but applied and was accepted into the Navy Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. He was then stationed in Italy where he was assigned as deck officer and held the distinguished honor of being the only black Commissioned Naval Officer on the 6000-member USS Cascade naval ship. Upon completion of his overseas term in 1972, he was assigned to return to the United States for Naval recruiting duty at Great Lakes in Chicago.
Upon his return to the University of Chicago, he attended the evening studies program and graduated in 1974 with a master of business administration (MBA) degree. His Naval service career ended as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.
His first post-graduate job was at First National Bank where he was the only black commercial real estate officer. He then moved on to become the director of the Atlanta Minority Development Center under the Small Business Administration (SBA).
It was with a passionate and driven entrepreneurial spirit that Eugene owned multiple businesses including ADSA computer business and QES, LLC real estate. As a licensed real estate broker, he pursued and acquired multiple investment opportunities. He was the owner of a 50-unit apartment complex, four duplexes in the West End, and acquired many other real estate holdings in addition to becoming a Carvel® Ice Cream store franchise owner.
Eugene's teenage love of the outdoors continued throughout his life. An avid fisher and hunter, he also loved to barbecue. When he was not outdoors, he enjoyed watching football and loved to play checkers, memory games and other board games with his grandchildren. He was a deep critical-thinker who had a high capacity to think analytically and loved to adopt and learn new technology throughout the years.
He married the former Dallas Louise Anderson on July 17, 1971. To this union were born three children: Qubi Eugene Campbell, Eugene W.R. Campbell, Jr., and Shawn Darlene Campbell.
Eugene is survived by his three children, sons Qubi Eugene Campbell (Rukiya) and Eugene W.R. Campbell, Jr. (Takisha); daughter Shawn Darlene Campbell; five grandchildren, Kyran, Jace, Chandler, Kingston and Eden; brother Wilburn Arthur Campbell, Jr.; sister-in-law Marjorie Anderson Pierre (Attorney H. Pierre, Jr.) sister-in-law, Rhonda Anderson and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
