Evan Arnold Harr
July 31, 1947 - November 21, 2024
Evan Arnold Harr, 77, passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 21, 2024. Born on July 31, 1947, in Preston, Idaho, he was the beloved only child of MaryAnn Kofoed and Fred Arthur Harr. Evan spent his early years in Preston before moving to Salt Lake City with his mother, during his junior year of high school, following the passing of his grandmother. He proudly graduated from East High School.
Evan met the love of his life, Peggy Lee Connell, during his high school years. The two married on January 31, 1969, in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly after graduating, Evan was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 5, 1967, and bravely served in the Vietnam War. Despite suffering a critical head wound on September 13, 1968, he survived against the odds and was awarded 2 Purple Hearts for his injuries, along with other commendations recognizing his courage and service. Through remarkable determination, he relearned to speak, walk, and write with his left hand.
Evan earned an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology and, after facing numerous challenges, began a career at Salt Lake County Planning & Zoning Division, where he worked for 29 years before retiring on July 31, 2001. He was known for his love of learning, particularly his passion for computers. Evan was a mentor to many and a loyal and supportive colleague.
In retirement, Evan found joy in traveling, especially on cruises, and dedicating his time to serving others. He was a steadfast advocate for veterans, participating in PTSD and writing groups, and volunteering annually at the San Diego Stand Down since 1998. Evan's generosity, wisdom, and quiet strength made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Evan was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Peggy, and their three daughters: Sherry Harr (Cristobal Oseguera), Stephanie Stanworth (Dave), and Melissa Brinkerhoff (Paul); 11 grandchildren: Nicholas Jacquez (Diana), Nathan Jacquez (Tyler), Madison Sorenson (Orlando), Christopher Stanworth, Spencer Stanworth, Dustin Stanworth, Brock Brinkerhoff, Parker Brinkerhoff, Elizabeth Brinkerhoff, Brayden Brinkerhoff, and Ben Brinkerhoff; and one great-grandchild Jonathan Jacquez. His family brought immense joy to his life, and his legacy of love, service, and quiet strength will continue to inspire generations.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel, 4310 South 3200 West, West Valley City, Utah. A visitation will precede the service from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at the Utah State Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah.
