Evangeline Reese Doyle, age 102, a lifelong resident of Lawrenceville, VA, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Tribute at the Glen in Woodbridge, VA, which has been her home since 2017.
She was the daughter of the late S.V. Reese and Irene Michael Reese and was widowed by Elton Norborne Doyle, Jr., her spouse of 66 years. She was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen R. Doyle.
Mrs. Doyle was a seventh grade History teacher at Lawrenceville Elementary School for many years. She loved to read and was a library aid at the Brunswick County Library after she retired from teaching. She also loved history and was instrumental in forming the Brunswick County Museum. An avid flower gardener and member of the Garden Club of Virginia, Mrs. Doyle was also an avid bridge player and belonged to multiple bridge clubs. A renowned good cook, she had a recipe for Brunswick stew that was included in Southern Living Magazine. She loved to travel and visit relatives. Her travels included trips to England, Scotland, and Wales. She was an active member of her church, Lawrenceville United Methodist Church, and its United Methodist Women. Her husband, Norborne, was Mayor of Lawrenceville for many years and her support of him in that role meant a lot to her and to him.
Mrs. Doyle is survived by a daughter, Susan Doyle; daughter-in-law, Frances “Frankie” Coleman Doyle; grandchildren, John “Jack” Norborne Doyle (Julia) and Thomas “Tom” Carter Doyle (Lauren); great-grandchildren, Carson Doyle, Bryse Doyle, Lucy Doyle, and Wylie Doyle, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2023 at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA, followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 12:30 p.m.
