Fabian Grgin, age 89, of Chicago, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 28, 2025. Beloved husband of Gerda, who preceded him in death. Loving father of Tommy (Doris) Grgin and Doris (Chuck) Roeske. Cherished grandfather of Rachel (Michael) Barranco, Veronica (Andrew Jacob) Hutchins, Carly Roeske, and Zachary (Cheyenne) Roeske. Dearest great-grandfather of seven.
Fabian escaped communist Yugoslavia and came to Chicago in 1955 with two pairs of socks and the clothes on his back. He lived the American dream, married to Gerda in 1961, and started having children soon after.
Fabo was always building and fixing things, he was the neighborhood MacGyver. He was a wonderful friend and a great neighbor who would help anyone if they had mechanical issues. He would never accept payment, but he was always open to having a beer (or two) afterwards. He loved to be with family and friends, especially during weekends at the Como house where there would always be plenty of weekend warriors, like the cousins and neighborhood friends, who would all enjoy barbequing and beverages.
Fabo and his beloved Gerda would also travel to his hometown island of Tkon in Croatia, where most of his family lived. They both loved being there. So long as family, food, and drinks surrounded him, he was happy.
He loved all Chicago sports teams, but the Cubs were his favorite with his wife.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral service and interment will be private.
